单独看 how 与 what 这两个词，它们的词义和词性都完全不同，但是，它们在某些特定的语言环境中，当与某些特定的词语搭配构成特定的句型时，它们却可以表示完全相同的意思。请看：
　　句型一 询问态度与看法
　　●Ｈｏｗ ｄｏ ｙｏｕ ｌｉｋｅ？
　　●Ｗｈａｔ ｄｏ ｙｏｕ ｔｈｉｎｋ ｏf …？
　　这两个句型均可表示“你觉得……怎么样”，但搭配不同， how 与动词 like 搭配， what 与动词 think of 搭配。如：
　　How do you like the book？=What do you think of the book？ 你觉得这本书怎么样？
　　句型二 询问天气情况
　　●Ｈｏｗ ｉｓ ｔｈｅ ｗｅａｔｈｅｒ…？
　　●Ｗｈａｔ ｉｓ ｔｈｅ ｗｅａｔｈｅｒ ｌｉｋｅ…？
　　这两个句型均可表示“……天气怎么样”，但搭配不同，即在使用 how 句型中没有介词 like，而在使用 what 句型中有介词 like。如：
　　How is the weather today？=Whats the weather like today？ 今天天气怎么样？
　　句型三 询问“如何说（表达）”
　　●Ｈｏｗ ｄｏ ｙｏｕ ｓａｙ…？
　　●Ｗｈａｔ ｄｏ ｙｏｕ ｃａｌｌ…？
　　这两个句型均可表示“……怎么说（表达）”，但搭配不同，how 与动词 say 搭配，what 与动词 call 搭配。如：
　　How do you say it in English？=What do you call it in English？ 这个用英语怎么说？
　　句型四 询问“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”等
　　●Ｈｏｗ…？
　　●Ｗｈａｔ’ｓ ｔｈｅ…？
　　在询问“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”等场合时， how 后接表示“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”等的形容词，且多用于口语或非正式文体； what 后接表示“长短”“宽窄”“高低”“多少”的名词，且多用于正式文体。如：
　　How old is he？=What is his age？ 他多大年纪了？
　　How wide is the river？=What’s the width of the river？ 这河有多宽？
　　How tall is the tower？=What’s the height of the tower？ 这塔有多高？
　　How long is the rope？=What’s the length of the rope？ 这绳子有多长？
