For centuries, various miserly figures have been portrayed both in Chinese and alien literature. Shylock and Jia Ren are such characters in two famous plays. This thesis explores and analyses the differences in their personalities in order to bring a deep-ened understanding of miser-type characters as the outcome of their societies.
