宜昌的闻名,不出三种原因:它是地理要津,控巴蜀,引荆襄,通湘粤,达中原,是我国中部腹地承东接西、南北交流的中枢,素有“三峡门户”、“川鄂咽喉”的称号。同时,它又是军事重镇,地势险要,易守难攻,素来都是兵家必争之地。此外,它还是水电之都。出于防洪和发电等综合效益考虑,举世瞩目的三峡工程也在这里兴建,并且竣工在即;这里还拥有已建成的葛洲坝电站、清江隔河岩电站、清江高坝洲电站。
