“曹鹤荪教授去世了,在昨天,1998年10月29日晚.”是西工大校办接到长沙国防科大电话通知后转告我的.一年多前,我收到过鹤荪的信,他早已卧病床褥,不能行走,长期住学校医院治疗,每天靠放大镜读一点报纸;信上的字迹,有的还很遒劲,但章法已不免凌乱,依靠静脉注射和定期输血维持的暮年,日子当然不会很久的.所以噩耗传来,我不感到突然.不过想到70年来的许多往事,此后再也没有人可以交谈,只能一个人自己单独回忆了,总不免感到凄然.
