隐字昭谏,钱塘人也。罗隐,《旧唐书》卷一八一《罗弘信传》附、《旧五代史》卷二十四、《五代史补》卷一、《吴越备史》卷一、《十国春秋》卷八十四皆有传。隐之籍贯,《北梦琐言》卷六、《旧五代史》、《旧唐书》本传、《宣和书谱》卷十一、《郡斋读书志》卷十八均以为钱塘,而《唐诗纪事》卷六十九罗隐条则谓其“字昭谏,余杭人”(《吴越备史》所记其字同)。则隐之籍贯有余杭,钱塘之别,然二说名异而实同。据《旧唐书》卷四十《地理志》三江南东道,杭州于隋唐时均曾称余杭郡,郡治即钱塘。言余杭者,乃称其郡名,
