The thalamic nerve cells release specific chemicals, the releasing hormones, into the portal circulation that supplies the pituitary gland. The effect of these hormones is highly specific and is necessary for coordinating the pituitary endocrine function. Thyroid-stimulating hormone releasing hormone (TRH) is the first to be purified and synthesized by the releasing hormone. The synthesized tripeptide, pyroglutamyl-histidyl-prolinamide, behaves exactly as TRH isolated from the thalamus.
