From August 19 to August 31 this year, the 23rd International Symposium on Earthquake and Geophysics (IASPAI) was held in Tokyo, Japan. The 800-plus delegates from more than 40 countries attending this meeting were at an unprecedented height. My country sent a delegation of more than 20 people. The number of Japanese scientists who participated in the meeting reached as many as 400, with 63 in the United States and 19 in the Soviet Union. It is rare in Japan for such a large number of scientists to attend a special conference, which shows that earthquake research remains the most concern in the world. And on September 1 after the meeting, a seismic drill was held in Shinjuku, Tokyo, to express the uncompromising attitude of modern urban residents to the earthquake disaster.
