Malaysia will export 39 million tons of freshwater to the Gulf each year. This is a message disclosed by the Middle East News. Ships are usually used to transport petroleum exported from the Middle East, but recently it will transport another, more valuable and more important thing: water. In the face of the growing water crisis in the Middle East, projects and ideas for water delivery from Malaysia and Turkey to Israel and the Gulf countries are taking shape. Although the economic benefits of such projects are not yet clear, it may be a solution to the water shortage problem in the Middle East. The project to transport water from Malaysia to the Middle East costs about US$600 million. The project plans to use the converted oil tanker to transport 39 million tons of water to the Gulf countries each year. The water comes from an artificial lake in the state of Terengganu on the eastern coast of Malaysia. A Danish marine transportation company has agreed to provide 10 ships for this project and has signed agreements with 3 Gulf countries. Israel stated that it attaches great importance to the import of water from Turkey. It will import 150 million cubic meters of water each year from the Manavgat River in southern Turkey.
