After World War II, Japan actively developed the automotive industry as an important pillar of its national industry. From the 1950s to the 1960s, the government stipulated that all imported cars must pay more than 40% of the tariffs, thus greatly controlling the import of automobiles. By 1978, Japan’s auto industry enjoyed tremendous growth. The Japanese car was very competitive. The government canceled the auto import tax. In 1951 Japan imported 45% of the total number of Japanese cars from foreign countries, down from 23% in 1954 to only 1% in 1960, while the 1% were all Mercedes-Benz luxury cars imported from Germany.
