Deep well water level has normal changes, but also abnormal changes. Normal changes, such as diurnal and half-moon changes, reflect the effects of solid tides and fluctuations in air pressure can cause water levels to rise and fall. Abnormal changes can be earthquake or non-seismic. The “heavy rain effect” phenomenon of deep water level discussed here is an example of non-seismic anomalies. There was a sudden rise in well water level of 130 millimeters after several heavy rains in late June 1980 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, a deep oil well with a distance of 1000 km and less than 100 millimeters earlier in the preceding eight months (Figure). Such a large change is an earthquake or anomalous interference? The preliminary analysis that the mutation is not an anomalous earthquake, but a “storm effect” results. Well Su-73 is a well for oil wells. It is located in the port commune of Taixian, Jiangsu Province, and is located in the deep south part of the Qintong Depression.
