建桥时已经是山雨欲来风满楼的大战前夕,茅以升预感到,也许建成后不久,他就不得不亲手将桥炸掉。20世纪中前期的铁路,几乎是唯一的大运量、长距离、全天候快速运输工具,是国家的生命线。战争时期,铁路的战略意义愈加凸显,往前线可以运送部队、武器弹药和后勤物资,往后方可以转移物资和人员。抗战期间,铁路作为战时交通运输工具,是战场,也是“诺亚方舟”。
