This article discusses motion compensation techniques for coherent measurement systems mounted on motion platforms. Many radar and sonar systems are designed to detect moving targets in airspace and suppress the echoes of fixtures. This can be done with some type of velocity (Doppler) filtering such as Moving Target Display (MTI) technology. When the detection system is mounted on a moving platform, time and space processing techniques are required to maintain good system performance. This article describes how to design the best (least mean square) array correction lobe pattern. This modified lobe pattern, when used with the main receive lobe, minimizes the effects of platform motion on the residual after clutter cancellation.
