翻译首重吃透原文。如果原文没有吃透,只顾依样画葫芦,逐字对译,难免满纸荒唐,不知所云,这只能称为死译。另有一种,原文并不难理解,但囿于原文的形式,亦步亦趋,结果通篇翻译腔,诘屈聱牙,难以卒读,这就是所谓硬译。还有一种,看来倒也文从字顺,唯独缺少原作的意境,尝尝淡而无味;无以名之,姑妄称之为淡译。死译、硬译及淡译虽各有特点,但有一个显著的共同处,就是三者均着重在形似上下功夫,而忽视了文学翻译贵在传神的要旨。今试各举一例:
