英国文化研究理论从产生之初一直是以马克思主义作为主要的参照系,文化研究所借用的是不断开放的马克思主义的理论资源,并在不断深化对越来越复杂的社会关系以及生产在其中的地位的唯物主义理解。在后现代思潮的影响下,传统马克思主义作为一种方法论在文化研究内部不断受到挑战。而后现代马克思主义由于其对本质主义公理的放弃,对差异身份的彰显,很快就引起文化研究者的兴趣,被吸收进文化研究理论中。文化研究学者在吸收和借鉴后马克思主义思想的同时,也在其中寻找到一种理论的缺席。
