During the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the mid-17th century, how North Korea viewed the Qing dynasty as the “dynasty” founded by “barbarians” was a very interesting issue. North Korea was regarded as a model tributary state in the Ming and Qing dynasties from the perspective of the earlier research on the “tribute trade system.” However, the image of this exemplary tributary nation has been challenged recently.
