The concept of beam guidance has been discussed for decades in the field of color cathode ray tubes (CRT). It is at the heart of Philco’s Apple System. The system was a high-quality, full-color display tube manufactured in the 1950s that was less expensive than other styles of tubes at the time. However, Apple systems, like all other systems, encountered barriers to early development. That is, the required speed of the beam steering circuit is faster than the speed of the circuit that was easily realized at that time. However, the electronic circuits finally catch up. In the early 1980s, Sony produced the first commercial beam-steering tube product, the TV projector.
