Nowadays， there’s a phenomenon that people tend to prefer surfing the Internet or watching TV shows most of the time， and less people would rather prefer to read a book. Electronic products are so popular among us； however， books are in a disfavor.
Reasons behind this weird phenomenon are multiple. First of all， the national cultural quality becomes lower. Although China is a country with thousands of years of traditional culture， the proportion of people who study has always been on the low side for thousands of years， which means most Chinese people do not study. Second， the change of people’s outlook on life results in the theory of useless reading. Nowadays， people work hard only for earning much more money. People also feel like measuring a person’s success with the amount of money which means people who read a lot of books do not necessarily make money， however， people who do not read also make money. So， the new theory of uselessness of reading is full of the whole society. What’s more， the habit of reading has not been formed since our childhood. Reading is a kind of certain habit， which needs to be nurtured from an early age. Nevertheless， Chinese children are busy with examinations and did not develop a good habit of reading. Children usually are thinking about getting high marks and going to a good university to find a well-paid job. They do not consider their own capabilities， nor do they consider the quality of reading. Certainly， the biggest reason is that the impact of Internet culture on modern books. Nowadays， smart phones are not only communication tools， but also portable microcomputers. We can look up for all kinds of information， watch TV and read everything on the mobile phones. Therefore， owning a mobile phone， you will have a network world， let alone reading books.
Regardless of all we mentioned above， books have so many advantages to us. Reading can not only broaden students’ horizons， increase knowledge， cultivate good self-study ability and reading ability， but also further consolidate all kinds of knowledge that students have learned in class. It can improve students’ reading and writing ability， help to form good moral character， and even play a great role in the study of the whole subject.
First of all， reading helps us to form good moral virtue and perfect personality. The fundamental purpose of Chinese teaching is to cultivate children with good personality， virtue， sincerity， kindness and beauty， who respects truth and possesses responsibility. Students who read a large number of humanistic fairy tales， biographies of characters， juvenile novels， and abridged editions of world-famous works， etc.， will be easily touched. When students read books， they can understand the interesting plots， reproduce vivid images in their hearts and appreciate the eternal human spirit of love， friendship， loyalty， bravery， integrity and even patriotism， which can promote the independent growth of students. Its effect is far better than that of teachers’ preaching. In addition， reading helps to accumulate language while reading. When many writers and scholars with literary attainments sum up their growing experience， they always feel like mentioning that they have read a lot of books in their teenage years. Even students with good scores in their classes often have a special preference for books and magazines. Because only reading can give us access to form multi-lateral language stimulation and it can strengthen the existing language information in the cerebral cortex again in the process of reading， so that the already formed connection system in the brain is more complete and tighter. This requires careful guidance from language teachers， such as introducing extracurricular reading materials， guiding the notation of reading notes， organizing reading exchange competitions and so on.
Moreover， reading helps to cultivate good habits of autonomous learning. Learning in modern society focuses on study how to learn and promoting the all-round development of personality. From this point of view， the students’ principal position must be guaranteed and the habit of autonomous learning must be cultivated. Allowing students to freely choose the books they love to read is an expression of respecting students’ individuality. The change from closed reading to open reading greatly stimulates students’ initiative in self-learning.
It can be seen that strengthening reading is not only the call of the times for language teaching， but also the successful experience of education worldwide. In our teaching pattern， we should bring reading into the orbit of language teaching， make full use of the resources of education in real life， optimize the language learning environment， and carry out rich and colorful learning practice activities. In addition， we need to broaden the content of it and enable students to learn and use language in a wide space， moreover， to enrich their knowledge and improve ability. Let’s all pay great attention to reading.
