According to World Oil Refinery’s October 2005 issue, Aileen Jamieson, Wood Mackenzie’s management consultant, said Europe is very likely to face a shortage of about 20% of its diesel fuel supply by 2015. Jamieson pointed out in its latest forecast that the demand for middle distillate oil in Europe will continue to grow rapidly and will be faster than the current and even planned supply capacity. Demand for diesel in Europe will reach 280 Mt / a by 2015, but the supply gap from European refineries could reach 50 Mt. In recent years, the growth rate of fuel production capacity in Europe has slowed down as refiners’ investments have focused on the production of clean fuels. 2004 is the most prosperous year for the oil refining industry. The acceleration of the global economic recovery and the rapid growth of fuel demand have generally boosted the profitability of refineries and will contribute to the increase in refining investment in the coming years. Several large hydrocracking units under construction will significantly increase European diesel production, including Total of France
