Australian scientists have developed a brick made from silt and soot. This brick is 20% lighter than mud bricks, but retains the other characteristics of ordinary building bricks. Scientists named this brick “BIOFLY” brick. This is an exclusive product that they developed over five years and is now ready for mass production. Syva Siwakumar, an associate professor of engineering at Wollongong University, said: “Our approach uses two types of waste that have not been seen elsewhere.” The “FLY” in the new brick name does not refer to the small insects that the sludge used in burning bricks attracts, but refers to the waste “coal soot” generated by thermal power stations.
