姚安县位于云南省中部,总面积1679.61平方公里,山区面积占79.6%,坝区面积占20.4%。一马平川的姚安坝子面积达119.35平方公里,是楚雄彝族自治州仅次于元谋的第二大坝子。姚安历史悠久,古为滇国地。自西汉元封二年(公元前109年)置弄栋县,至今已有2100年的历史。历代建制屡经变革,自隋唐至清末均为府(路)、州。民国三年(1914年)改姚州为姚安县。1946年,云南省第八区行政督察专员公署设于姚安。云南和平解放后,姚安县属楚雄专区。1958年,姚安、大姚、盐丰、永仁4县合并为大姚县,属楚雄彝族自治州。1961年恢复姚安县。至1990年,全县辖9乡3镇、79个村公所(办事处),县党政机关驻栋
