电子信箱又称电子邮件,它是计算机化的邮政服务。如果把电子信箱系统与我们熟知的邮政系统相比较则更易于理解,电子信箱相当于邮局,电子信件的投送、传递、交换、存储、转发和接收即相当于普通信件在邮政系统中的寄出、传送和投递过程。电子信件与普通信件相同的是:既可以是私人信件也可以是公文,既可以是普通信件也可以是加急信件或挂号信件,若地址有误,电子信箱系统同样会把电子信件退回并说明退回原因;电子信件与普通信件不同的是:电子信件不但可以是静态文字和图象,还可以是具有动画和声音
