Corticosteroids are widely used in the treatment of respiratory allergy disease for 30 years, but its mechanism of action is still unclear. Budesonide, a non-halogenated glucocorticoid with a topical anti-inflammatory effect, has been shown to have a good effect on hay fever. Anti-IgE has been used as an intranasal challenge test and found that it causes nasal symptoms similar to type I allergies in hay fever patients, whereas in normal humans it fails to elicit a response. Previous in vitro tests have demonstrated that anti-IgE can release histamine in human lung tissue, nasal polyps and basophils. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nasal administration of budesonide for one week on nasal mucosal histamine levels and anti-IgE-induced histamine release in patients with hay fever in order to speculate on the role of corticosteroids in immediate-onset allergic reactions.
