Standardization organizations (eg, IEEE-SA, European Telecommunications Standards Institute, JEDEC) develop and develop interoperability standards for new technologies. Standards help facilitate the rollout of new technologies such as Wi-Fi, USB and LTE by coordinating devices from different manufacturers. The goal of developing a standard is to establish a standard that is available, widely accepted, and commercially successful. Standards often include patented technologies that are bound to be subject to standard product infringement (“standard essential patents” or “SEPs”). Standardization organizations often choose between different competing technologies, but once a patented technology is incorporated into widely accepted standards, it no longer faces competition and is inherently avoidable
