The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed a 9-meter-high submerged dam to stop salt water from entering urban waterworks south of New Orleans. The submarine is 518m wide across the river and is designed to stop the thick brine layer that continues to climb up the riverbed every year. The Army Corps of Engineers monitors the movement of salt wedges each year and as the salt wedges approach the water intakes, the group of engineers must decide whether to spend money on building a submarine dam or to risk polluting New Orleans’s water supply, which has more than a million people.
