新中国的第一部彩色电影,是越剧影片《梁山伯与祝英台》,1953年底拍竣。当时风靡一时,在香港创造了票房记录。当然,最广为人知的故事,是在日内瓦会议期间,此片被周恩来誉为“中国的罗密欧和朱丽叶”,用以招待各国记者,国际舆论对虹色中国传统文化发展的怀疑由此冰释。事实上,《梁山伯与祝英台》原名《梁祝哀史》,是越剧舞台上的保留剧目。
