In August 1945, the Japanese invaded. In September, I came to Chongqing from Lichun in southern Sichuan. Immediately afterwards, I was assisted by Hang Lvwu, chairman of the Commission for Disposal of Wartime Cultural Relics and Ma Heng and Liang Si-cheng, the deputy chairmen, in my office as Assistant Representative of Pingjin District. At that time, there was a lack of means of transport and I do not know when it could start. At exactly this time, Zhai Yin, the deputy director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, came to Chongqing with a letter from the UNESCO Headquarters. He claimed to be commissioned to come to China to understand the loss and protection of post-war artifacts and hoped to obtain approval to visit Chengdu, Xi’an and Beiping . I hope there will be a translator. As for traffic problems, the U.S. Air Force is not difficult to solve. Ma, Liang Liang suggested that I be a translator, with the consent of Hang Liwu, leaving in early October.
