Rapid detection of a disease outbreak is the key to taking effective control measures. Automated analysis of electronic laboratory data allows rapid detection of disease outbreaks or outbreaks of pathogens that have a common clinical profile. The Netherlands has developed a disease surveillance system based on existing electronic laboratories and connected to the Internet, namely the Infectious Disease Monitoring System (ISIS).
