1789年4月30日,乔治·华盛顿宣誓就任美国首任总统。此后,总统就职仪式成为美国政治生活中的一个重要环节。对于获胜党而言,这个仪式是庆祝胜利的高潮时刻:盛大的聚会、排场的游行和舞会一个接着一个,最后还有精心安排的总统宣誓。毫无疑问,当选总统是所有这一切活动的主角,除此之外,没人能与他共享这种权力巅峰的荣誉光环,即便是副总统也不例外。但美国历史上也曾出现九次以副总统充当主角的特殊就职仪式。
April 30, 1789, George Washington was sworn in as the first president of the United States. Since then, the presidential inauguration has become an important part of American political life. For the winning party, the ritual is the climax of the celebration of victory: a grand gathering, parades and promises, and finally a carefully curated presidential oath. There is no doubt that the election of the president is the protagonist of all this activity, and nobody else can share with him the glory of such a peak of power. Even the vice president is no exception. However, there have also been nine special inaugurations in the history of the United States that featured the vice presidents.
