先父陈德霖,自幼坐科于三庆班,初学武旦,从一位对昆曲有精湛修养的朱先生学习,与錢金福(武净,錢宝森之父)、李寿山(初工昆旦,后改花脸,人称大个李七)、张长保(武生,楊小楼之师)等为师兄弟。后改唱青衣,拜田宝琳先生为师。十五岁出科后,搭春台班演戏,同台合作的有譚鑫培、俞菊笙、刘赶三、刘春喜等人。二十岁时,被选为“内廷供奉”,入清宮演戏至慈禧逝世。以后又与譚鑫培、孙菊仙、龔云甫、刘鴻声、楊小楼、梅兰芳、余叔岩、高庆奎等人先后合作,演出于南北各地。直到他六十九岁逝世前,从未間断过舞台生活。
