This article is a commentary that begins by deriving a general PLL noise equation and dividing the additive noise into passband noise and stopband noise. In the following chapters, the characteristics of all the major additive noise sources are studied and the actual values of the power spectral density are given. In the last section, the analysis of minimization of additive noise in PLL systems and PLL frequency synthesizers is emphasized. Finally, the phase noise power spectral density of several actual PLL frequency synthesizers is plotted in a normalized form. This article also lists a large number of references.
