This study uses the dynamic system theory (DST) framework to track the process of developing L2 vocabulary in eight freshmen and seniors. Through a combination of self-designed vocabulary depth test and vocal thinking method, this study finds that the development of vocabulary depth knowledge fluctuates and presents nonlinear characteristics, and the language input is not directly proportional to the progress. As learners continue to rely on mother tongue intermediary, their influence on word meaning and collocation has its own strengths and weaknesses, and progress and retreat in cross-linguistic discrimination have also shown the dynamic competition between mother tongue semantic information and second language semantic information. This study also reveals that the individual differences in the process of lexical development reflect different stages of development of learners.
