According to large-scale surveys by Medsger and Masi (1971), the annual number of new cases of scleroderma per million people is 2.7. With regard to silicosis associated with scleroderma, there is mixed opinion. Erasmus (1960) reported a very high incidence of scleroderma in gold miners in South Africa, but Rogan (1960) claimed that few were found in the UK gold mine.
