Yokogawa will invest 25 billion yen (230 million U.S. dollars) in a large compound semiconductor manufacturing facility in the state of Chennai near Tokyo. And is expected to put into operation in November 2006. Yokogawa said the company has developed an optical packet switch for use in the next generation of 40 Gbit / s optical networks. At the heart of this all-optical switch is a GaAs chip that transmits signals directly without the need for an electronic switch. The device can convert signals in less than 2 ns and is by far the fastest current injection optical converter in the world. The GaAs-based double heterojunction ridge waveguide is a key semiconductor component in this device and has a minimum exchange time of 1.2 ns at 1550 nm. Waveguide made in a 4-inch GaAs wafer, a total of more than 800 conversion chips. The company estimates that its optical communications business will generate 100 billion yen (919 million U.S. dollars) each year by 2010.
