Foreword The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Performance Test Standards Committee II (PTC II) is responsible for establishing field test standards for large industrial fans. Fans are defined as “one or more stages of stepless cooling of air or gas moving devices.” Another definition is: “A fan is a device that moves air and takes advantage of the power that drives the rotating impeller.” Fan performance is based on three primary variables: (a) the maximum number of fluids (air or gas) passing through the fan per unit of time, and (b) the “effective”, “ideal” or “mechanical” Per unit mass or volume); (c) Mechanical power required to drive the fan. These variables can be used to determine (or can be deduced) flow and effective specific energy (consistent
