近年,湖南被赞为歌剧的“绿洲”,然而……“死党”和春风处于偏远楚地的湖南歌剧界的实力并不很强。全省十数个歌剧(或兼演歌剧的)团体中,既没有高手云集的大歌剧院,也没有名家荟萃的强力集团,用一句湖南土话说,无非是“乡里狮子乡里舞”。及至七十年代末,春风送暖,湖南的歌剧才顿显蓬勃。《骄杨》、《中原女烈》、《带血的百鸟图》、《相亲亭》、《三个女儿的婚事》等接踵推出,一批“虽九死其未悔”,自命为“歌剧死党”的同志,重又为歌剧的繁荣而热情执著地奔走呼号。1981年全国歌剧座谈会的召开,更增加了这股势头。其时,全国上报歌剧剧本九十余个,湖南约占五分之一。会议确定对六个剧本进行讨论,湖南的《现在的年轻人哪……》和《斑竹泪》即在其中。赴会代表中湖南人数也最多,被戏称作“湘军”。不久,湖南省歌剧研究会即告成立。几年来,“湘军”靠着脚踏实地的苦干,的确显示了一股坚韧骁勇的“辣味儿”,他们棒打不散,用事实取
