Background materials 2007 is the 30th anniversary of China’s resumption of the college entrance examination system. In August 1977, at the National Symposium on Science and Technology Education, Comrade Deng Xiaoping explicitly proposed to resume the college entrance examination and awaken the university dreams that the majority of young people lost during the decade-long catastrophe. In 1977, the number of applicants for the national college entrance examination was about 5.7 million, and the number of admissions was about 270,000. The admission rate was 4.7%. In 2007, the national plan enrolled about 5.7 million students, which was equivalent to the number of students enrolled in 1977, and the enrollment rate in Chinese universities increased to 22%.
