刘放吾,湖南人,1942年任入缅抗击日寇的中国远征军新38师113团团长。在当年4月著名的仁安羌战役中,他率不足1团兵力抗击日军1万余人,迫敌弃尸1200多具后逃窜,解救英军7000余人和被日军俘虏的美籍记者及传教士500余人。上个世纪90年代,英国首相撒切尔夫人曾拜访刘放吾,当面向他表示感谢与敬佩;美国总统布什也曾致函刘放吾表示敬意和谢意。
