一胡愈之(1896—1986年)以出版家知名于世。其实,他对我国思想文化领域的贡献是多方面的,有相当多的成就至今尚未为人充分了解。须知五四新文化思潮涌现之前,年轻的胡愈之却是首先以翻译家的身份登上了文坛。1896年9月9日,胡愈之出生于山明水秀的浙东上虞县县城(今名丰惠镇)。1914年刚18岁时,他于10月间考入上海商务印书馆编译所。当时编译所设三个部:英文部、国文部和理化部。他被分配在理化部当练习生。理化部的
