英雄的人民阿富汗人民历来以勇敢純朴著称,在历史上他們曾經用极簡单的武器(士刀、士枪、木棍和石块等)三次击退了比自己强大几十倍的英国殖民主义者的侵犯。在战爭中男的在前方打仗,蒙着面罩的妇女在后方或在前綫供给粮草和进行护理。这中间最值得提起的是在第二次英阿战爭中(1878—1893年)的一位女英雄馬拉萊。她是阿富汗南方坎大哈地区的普什图族人。1880年7月,阿富汗人民在离坎大哈城不远的梅旺地区追歼敌人。当时正值酷暑,阿軍在連續数日作战中过度疲劳,战局漸瀕危急。馬拉萊見此情景,便奋不顾身地摘下面罩,振臂高呼:
