INTRODUCTION Bentonite is recognized as the most promising candidate for backfill materials because of its low permeability, high adsorption capacity and plasticity in the geological disposal of high level waste. In accordance with the concept of multi-layer barrier, bentonite as an engineering barrier needs to meet a variety of performance requirements. Chemical barrier performance is one of the important aspects. It is required to have a high resistance to nuclides (long-lived actinides and fission products) that are of general concern in waste disposal.
