哈利威尔的《模仿论美学》中将模仿分为五个层次:“第一,视觉上相似(包括形象化的艺术作品);第二,行为上的仿效、模仿;第三,扮演,包括戏剧演出;第四,作为有意义的或表现性的声音结构的语言或音乐制作;第五,形而上学的符合。”哈利威尔的模仿理论充分地揭示了模仿在文学艺术中的作用。模仿可分为无意识模仿和有意识模仿、外部模仿和内部模仿等多种类型。在文学艺术中,模仿手法可以帮助模仿者去认识模仿的事物,发现事物的内在规律和本质,寻求模仿之物与被模仿之物间的某些相似点。因此,这种带有深刻的社会性质的行为就会在文学作品里有所表现,如美国犹太作家辛格的短篇小说
