韩国南部忠清南道公州郡公州邑西北约1公里的宋山里,是一片风光明媚的丘陵地带。在这片丘陵之中,分布着众多百济时代的古坟。早在朝鲜半岛独立以前,日本学者就曾在此调查发现了包括石室墓(M1—M5)和装饰着四神壁画的砖室墓(M6)在内的多座古坟,使得人们对于百济时代墓葬的结构有了大致的了解。1971年6月29日,韩国文物管理局为了解决已经被发掘的M5和M6的渗水问题,决定在M6北侧山坡上开挖排水沟,不料在施工过程中却意外发现了百济熊津邑(今韩国公州邑)
