Seismologists attending the U.S. conference warned that a catastrophic earthquake like Armenia in the Soviet Union (which killed about 4,500 people) will become more frequent and devastating in the future. Roger Bilham of the University of Colorado at the meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Denver said that one third of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the world are located in areas with high seismic risk. Armenia earthquake is not large, the magnitude is only Rils 6.9. The earthquake devastated because of the large population of the area it was in and the lack of earthquake-resistant design in the local buildings. The recent earthquake hit around 10,000 in Mexico City, despite the epicenter hundreds of kilometers away from Mexico City.
