On May 27, 2009, Venezuela’s Ministry of Defense and the Navy held a grand ceremony at the state-owned DIANCA shipyard to launch the “Buque de Vigilancia Litoral” coastal patrol ship No. 4 “Tamaño” (GC -24) No. 103 hull steel cutting ceremony. The Vice President of Venezuela and the representative of the Navantia Shipbuilding Group of Spain attended the ceremony, which marked that Deanca Shipyard officially started to cooperate with the Navantia Shipbuilding Group in the national port of Cabello to build the fourth BVL offshore for the Venezuelan Navy Cruiser. This also marks Venezuela becoming the third country in the Spanish-speaking world to build a surface-guided surface ship after Spain and Mexico. The project will boost the capacity of Venezuela’s own shipbuilding industry. The BVL-class four ships were “GC-21”, “GC-22” and "GC- 23) and Tamanako (GC-24). The first ship is expected to be delivered from late 2009 to early 2010 and the remaining three will be delivered by 2011.
