查明立地质量是造林、育林及森林经理工作中一项比较重要的基础工作。而立地质量的好坏是通过地位级和立地指数来鉴定的,尤以立地指数最为通用。目前世界上一些林业比较发达的西德、瑞典、芬兰、加拿大、美国、日本等国对立地指数都进行了长期而广泛的调查研究,并编制了以树种、地域为单位的立地指数表用之于林业生产。在立地质量的评定、最适树种的选择、予估林地生产力等等方面发挥出独有的作用。
