兖州站管辖兖州客站和兖州北站，是津浦线和新乡—兖州—石臼所交叉处的枢纽区段站。改革开放以来，运量急剧上升，该站能力已处于饱和状态。按1988年“4.1”实行的新运行图，上行场到发线通过能力利用率按计算能力算已到0.97，改编能力利用率按无调比推算为1.08，菏泽南分界口要增加4～6对货物列车，为此，提高兖州地区通过能力，是急待解决的问题。
