Ceramic Heat Exchangers for Coal-fired Gas Turbines According to the “Power Engineering” report of August 1990, coal-fired gas turbines are one of the thorniest issues in the power industry. Now, the energy contracting department at Hague International, Maine, USA, is developing a ceramic heat exchanger between the coal combustion chamber and the gas turbine. The heat exchanger, while serving as a barrier against gas contaminants, transfers the heat of the gas to the high-pressure clean air stream entering the gas turbine. If successful, the ceramic heat exchanger is expected to withstand a temperature of 1927 ° C of the coal combustion chamber and be capable of sufficient effective heat transfer to raise the temperature of the air stream to about 1260 ° C - gas turbine inlet temperature. The Hague approach will use standard coal and gas turbine equipment, remove common sulfur flue gas from coal combustion chambers and apply electrostatic precipitators to remove fly ash.
