“始祖”與“太祖”是中古時期的廟制争論中經常出現的兩個概念。其中“始祖”一詞並不見於經書正文,僅在《儀禮·喪服傳》中出現。鄭玄根據自己的禮學構想,以“始祖”對應郊祀,“太祖”對應廟制,作出了明確的區分。但鄭玄的理論無法應用在此後的王朝禮制實踐中。於是王肅等人針對鄭玄的理論作出了調整,一度使始祖失去了其禮學上的重要性。然而針對唐代禘袷中出現的問題,趙匡通過《辨禘義》一篇,將始祖引入廟制之中,爲宋代以後出現的始祖争論,提供了理論基礎。
“Ancestors” and “Taizu” are the two concepts that often appear in the temple system debate in the ancient times. Among them, the word “ancestor” is not found in the text of the scriptures, only appeared in “Rites and Mourns Service Biography.” Zheng Xuan made a clear distinction according to his conception of ceremony of rituals, with “ancestor” corresponding to the suburbs and “Taizu” corresponding to the temple system. However, Zheng Xuan’s theory can not be applied in the later practice of dynastic etiquette. So Wang Su and others Zheng Zheng theory made adjustments, once the ancestors lost their ritual importance. However, in view of the problems appearing in the Tang Dynasty, Zhao Kuang introduced the ancestor into the temple system through “Discrimination”, which provided the theoretical basis for the argument of the ancestor appearing after the Song Dynasty.
