她是中国民主促进会的创始人之一。她是在天安门城楼上和新中国的缔造者们一起参加了开国大典的人中为数极少的健在者之一。她参加了新政协筹备会,是中国人民政治协商会议第一届委员。她在83岁高龄当选为七届全国人大常委会副委员长,在副委员长的职位上一直工作到93岁,是历届副委员长中年纪最长的一位。她不仅是我国著名的教育家、法学家,在中国社会学界也是大家公认的“元老级”的人物。她主编的国家重点科研项目《关于改革开放以来中国农村婚姻家庭的新变化》获得了首届国家社会科学基金项目优秀成果特别荣誉奖。
She is one of the founders of China Association for Promoting Democracy. She was one of the very few surviving men who participated in the founding ceremony along with the founding members of New China in the Tiananmen tower. She attended the preparatory meeting for the new Political Consultative Conference and is the first member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. At the age of 83, she was elected as vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Seventh National People’s Congress. She has worked until the age of 93 in the position of vice chairman and is the longest-serving member of all previous vice chairmen. She is not only a famous educator and jurist in China, but also a recognized member of the “veteran class” in Chinese sociology. Her key national research project “New Changes in Marriage and Family in Rural China Since the Reform and Opening up” won the Special Prize of Outstanding Achievements of the First National Social Science Fund Project.
