After entering Senior Three, besides strenuous revisions and examinations, what the students think most and discuss most is aspirations of life. As far as I know, most of my classmates have already specified their choices of majors and their aspirations of life. Some classmates excel in science subjects, so they have chosen science and engineering subjects, hoping that they will become scientists or engineers. Some students have artistic talents, so they have chosen arts and designs. Besides, some other students have chosen accounting or media.
What should I choose? This is a question asked more than once by my parents and teachers and a question I have kept asking myself. But frankly speaking, I am not fully prepared yet.
First of all, I am not as outstanding in any subject as to win any national or provincial awards. Besides, with my age and intelligence, I may not be able to determine my aspirations of life now. Of course, this surely does not mean that I do not have any pursuit in life. I think it might be more desirable to learn some basic subjects well in arts and sciences colleges to improve one’s quality and thinking ability before determining one’s major in the university. In my opinion, besides selecting majors, it is more important to foster positive outlooks on life and values in the university.
My father was a medicine major and obtained his doctor’s degree. Then he became a university teacher. After he was promoted to associate professor, he gave up his major to go into business. He did so well that he became a vice president of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in China. However, he resigned from this job again. By taking advantage of his experience accumulated over the years in the enterprise and his extensive contacts and resources, he engaged in risk investment to help those young people full of entrepreneurial passion but short of funds and management experience to realize their dreams. My father tells me that what he concerns most is not how many investment returns he can get but that he can work with those passionate pioneering entrepreneurs every day. It is his biggest joy to help them, with his experience and resources, to realize their dreams and share their successes and setbacks in their entrepreneurial undertakings. My father’s experiences tell me that one’s major in university will not necessarily become one’s lifelong career.
I know there are usually two career paths, i.e., professional and all-round ones. Maybe I will not choose professional jobs such as lawyer, accountant or engineer. But I know I have my own strong points and will cultivate my own development orientation accordingly. I am outgoing, good at communications and keen on various jobs involving people. Besides, I have good organizing ability. As a major leader of the Students’ Union, I have organized many activities, big or small, and initiated some societies. Therefore, management, human resources, marketing, and business majors may be more suitable to me. I also know that the key is not what you do, but that you really love the job and try your best to do it well.
I love life and my family. I will still be well contented if I have tried my best in the future but failed to achieve the success in ordinary people’s eyes, without luxury residence or goods, without high-end cars or jewelry, but with a houseful of books, rich memories and wonderful experiences with my family and friends.
Not long ago, I initiated an activity to offer healthcare and medicine to the senior people in a rural resthome and established health files for them. I think this is of great significance, because I have not only helped the old people, but benefited a lot myself. Therefore, I have realized that the career I choose is not important or even the success I have achieved in common people’s eyes is not so important. What really matters is that I am a useful person to the society, because I can help people around me and make the world better and more wonderful.
